How to avoid being ghosted on the gram
Ghosting isn’t nice but it does happen.
And one of the biggest misconceptions people can have is that the ghosting will go down as you make more money…
That couldn’t be less true.
Over at Social Cactus, we get people not responding to DM’s, not turning up to calls and disappearing once we’ve shared with them their contracts.
It’s normal.
And it’s part of business.
(See what else we have to say on the subject here).
But, there are things you can put in place to protect your time and energy and cut ghosting down to a minimum.
Now we must say here, that people ghosting you once you’ve sent them a contract or once they’ve said yes to working with you is also normal and unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about it.
This isn’t a blog with a step-by-step guide to bullying someone into signing their contract.
At the end of the day, the client can always cancel and they don’t actually owe us a reason - although that would be considered polite - so whenever we’ve been asked about this subject matter, our advice is: Let them go with love.
If you’ve got someone ghosting you, not paying their invoice on time and not respecting your time or energy then it's probably best to say adios at this point than 6 months down the line…
Anyway…
Here are some tips you can do to reduce the chances of being ghosted:
tip #1
When someone asks for the price of your programme or details, be open and honest. There are no rules about ‘getting someone on the call before you disclose prices’ or ‘don’t go into detail because they might get confused’ - we call bullsh*t. And that’s actually pretty patronising too. Do what feels right for you and maintain integrity.
tip #2
It’s not about you - so don’t take it personally. One of the biggest reasons being ghosted hurts is because we take it personally. We make it mean something about us: our prices are too high; we aren’t good enough; they’ve found someone better; they didn’t like us etc. The vast majority of the time this is down to YOUR mindset and the beliefs you’ve stored about yourself.
tip #3
Send call reminders - this is the beauty of systems, processes and automation. Call reminders are a fab way to ensure that the ghosting isn’t down to just being forgotten about. To be fair, reminders can be used across the board: contract reminders; invoice reminders; you name it, some software somewhere can remind you about it.
tip #4
Appreciate that people have lives outside of the gram - we know, shock right? But it’s true. As the world has started to open up more and travel is available more freely, people aren’t behind their screens quite as much as they were. This means they may have read your DM but then got sidetracked with their day. Or the fact they’ve not replied to you for 3 days might not be because they’re not interested but because they’ve just been super busy.
